So, why are MS apps so slow? It's going to really hurt my feelings to have to use it when starting it up is so slow. Can break work flow to click on a file from an email attachment, and then have it take 3000 years to open. Anybody using the Office 2016 apps have this much slowness? Anything to do about it? Under Microsoft Windows or on a Mac, you can set a file's properties so it becomes read only. If you right-click on an Excel file from within a Windows file listing and select 'Properties,' you can set or clear the read-only status to make a document editable.

I have Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus and I've been having issues using Excel recently. I'm not trying to do anything fancy, literally just colour text, make it bold, do basic sums on it.
But it can take around 5-8 seconds just to make a cell's text red for instance. Why is this?I have huge amounts of available ram and a very fast desktop pc. I've tried disabling all Add-ins but that hasn't helped.
Surely computers should be able to do basic things like colour text and do basic sums with ease. BTW I'm just using =B1.C1 or =sum(B1:B10), no macros etc.
'I have huge amounts of available ram and a very fast desktop pc'It would help to post the specs & make/model of your system. Also, there is no 'Windows 64'.
I'm guessing you have a 64-bit version, but is it XP, Vista, 7, 8, or 10? When's the last time you ran a cleaner & scanned for viruses & malware? If you have a store bought computer (Acer, Dell, HP, etc), have you ever taken the time to remove the bloatware & disable unnecessary startup apps?CCleaner (get the Slim version):Adwcleaner:JRT:Malwarebytes Antimalware. I added the basic specs into the original post. I'm really looking for people to help who have a more thorough understanding of Excel / Office and what may be causing the problem on that level. There is no need to be rude riider.I know how to optimize the pc in general so that it runs fast for other tasks including adjusting the startup in msconfig, defragmenting hdd, removing context menu entries which slow things down etc. I don't allow anything to use too much CPU or ram that I don't need.
The CPU is at 99% idle, ram shows as 4500mb available, 2225mb free memory, 3500mb in use from task manager.More detailed specs:Windows 7 64bit Professional (build 7601 SP1)Sapphire PCI Express R7 260X 2GB Graphics Card (OC GDDR5, HDMI, DVI, DP, 2S)Intel HD graphics 46001TB hddSandisk 240Gb SSDIntel i5-4690 Haswell Refresh 3.50ghzHyperX 8gb 2400mhz CL11 DDR3 HyperX BeastGigabyte GA-Z97M-DS3H rev 1001 (1.1)Coolermaster 650w GXBTW I deleted the old version of Office already in case that was causing problems as you say mmcconaghy but it hasn't helped.message edited by Adamantus10. Re: ' There is no need to be rude riider.' I see nothing rude in riider's response. He correctly pointed out that there is no such thing as Windows 64. He could only work with what you posted, so he simply pointed out a piece of information that was not usable and asked for clarification. He then asked a series of relevant questions related to your PC.He ended his post by graciously offering 4 links to utilities that might help you solve your issue. You came to this forum asking for help and riider correctly, and in a friendly manner, offered some suggestions - in the form of questions - that have helped others many times in the past.message edited by DerbyDad03.
Re: he quoted meI quoted you also. Mike quoted you too. This is done only as a means of reference. This forum does not have a 'quote original' feature like many other forums do, so the only way to address specific points is to quote them manually. I don't see that as confrontational, I see that as trying to be clear and making sure that everyone knows which points are being addressed.re: and then brought into question everything I had said. Please show me where he questioned anything you said other than the Windows 64 spec. You said that you 'tried disabling all Add-ins but that hasn't helped.'
Riider then asked a series question not related to add-ins. He asked about bloatware, startup apps, viruses and malware.
That is not questioning anything you said, it is simply asking for more information and offering well founded suggestions. Each of those items, and indeed the add-ins that you disabled, can cause poor performance.
He didn't question anything you said you tried, he merely expanded on the possible causes for your issues.Neither riider nor anyone else in this forum is sitting next to you at your computer. If all you tell us is that you disabled add-ins, how would we know 'when's the last time you ran a cleaner & scanned for viruses & malware' or if you have 'ever taken the time to remove the bloatware & disable unnecessary startup apps for a store bought computer'? The only way to determine that is to ask.Mike asked you a couple of very valid questions also. Why do you not find his questions confrontational? Why don't you find this question confrontational:'So what did you change in your system?'
Doesn't that make you feel that he is accusing you of causing the problem? I doubt it does, because it shouldn't, just like none of riider's questions should make you feel like he is questioning your expertise.re: I found your post pretty confrontational as well but I didn't come here for that, I just want to get some help on my excel issue. Then I will have to assume that you found this post confrontational also, but there is nothing I can do about that. Everyone in this forum is here on volunteer basis.
Riider took the time to ask some very valid questions about the status of your system and you attacked him. If anyone should feel 'confronted', it's riider, not you. DerbyDad03 I don't want to fall out with anyone but sometimes people seem to want to pick holes in things instead of actually make some well-informed suggestions.mmcconaghy No error messages it just seems to pause when clicking a cell and then the cell is finally highlighted around 5-8 seconds later.
I suppose it could be trying to talk to Microsoft (not something I want it to, no interest in its cloud features). I'll try what you suggest about ensuring the cells are deleted but I'm not sure there is any stray data anywhere. The workbook has 3 sheets and only 1 has a lot of data in it. It's mainly composed of simple formulas going from columns A-L and rows 1-112.
I have excel.xlsm file format with about 20000kb file size.i have a macro inside it but the macro runs ok and fast. The problems is it is very slow during opening and closing, taking about few minutes.i then try to change it to.xlsb file format which reduce its size to 2000kb (very huge difference) and the file run fast while opening but still very slow when closing or saving. Sometimes closing it make the excel 'not responding'. I have no macro running when opening or closing event. Any suggestion on what caused this?
